Special Interest : I am a Counselling Psychologist working in private practice in Bryanston and Morningside, Johannesburg.

I specialise in working with children, adolescents and adults in individual psychotherapy. I also offer couples and family therapy. Therapy may entail developing understandings into the client’s emotional struggles and relationship difficulties as well as enhancing coping strategies you already possess to facilitate sustained change beyond therapy.

I have a particular interest in working with children who present with emotional, developmental, learning and adjustment difficulties, and offer play therapy to address these challenges. I aim to help children develop coping strategies, as well as build their confidence and inner resources. I also have extensive experience in Student Counselling and enjoy working with students and young adults who often face significant changes at this stage in their lives whilst transitioning into adulthood.

In addition to therapy, I offer a variety of comprehensive assessment services such as Psychoeducational Assessments - this includes emotional assessments, IQ and scholastic assessments, and school readiness. I also offer career assessments and guidance.

Special Interest : Services offered:

• Grade 9 Subject Choice Assessment

The purpose of a subject choice assessment is to support Grade 9 students in the discovery and exploration of school subjects for Grade 10. This will provide guidance in making the correct choose of appropriate subjects, which are based on your personality, interests, study habits and aptitude.

• Career Assessment

Choosing a career is often a daunting and complicated process, as most individuals have difficulty in deciding once they have completed matric. A career assessment can provide guidance in this regard as it is aimed at integrating your intellectual ability, personality and interests with that of your future occupation.

• Combined Subject Choice and Career Assessment

Subjects chosen for matric should be in accordance with the field which one would wish to pursue. This dual assessment is aimed at integrating the clients recommended subject choice with the requirements of a chosen degree, diploma or certificate to aid him or her in becoming successful in desired career path.

• Career Transition

It has become a common trend among working adults to change their vocational interests during their lifetime. Career needs and values changes at different stages of an individual’s life. This decision usually encompasses self-doubt and financial concerns. A career transition assessment is likely to ease this transition as it often provides insight and confirmation. A career transition assessment battery subsequently assesses your work values, cognitive abilities, personality and interests which help guide you into a more comfortable vocational fit.

• Psychological-Educational Assessment

A child presenting academic, behavioural or emotional difficulties at school may benefit from a Psychological-Educational assessment, as it provides a holistic picture of your child’s functioning. Behavioural or emotional issues usually have an impact on the learning environment and this assessment determines learning ability and potential by measuring current intellectual, emotional and behavioural functioning. The earlier difficulties are identified, the sooner remedial action can be taken. This assessment is conducted by myself and Dr Adele Romanis (Clinical Psychologist)

• Concession Assessment

This assessment technique is used to determine the kind of assistance needed by a leaner or student to complete exams. This entails the allowance of extra time, a scriber, a reader, the use of a computer or computer programme, enlarged print or breaks during the exam. Concessions are subject to the requirements of the Department of Education or the IEB concerned. This assessment is conducted by myself and Dr Adele Romanis (Clinical Psychologist)

• School Readiness Assessments

School readiness assessments is a detailed analyse of your child’s intellectual and emotional readiness to start “big school”. It also identifies children who are potentially at risk for developmental difficulties. Adjusting to an environment characterised by structure and formalised procedures can often be a daunting and a scary process for children. These feelings can be heighten when they have potential developmental delays which consequently can cause cognitive, emotional and social difficulties, boredom, resistance to learning, tension, low self-esteem, attention and concentration difficulties which may hamper a child’s ability to learn.

Special Interest : Special Interests

Self Esteem; Identity and interpersonal relating.

I focus on all issues associated with lack of secure self-esteem such as poor body image, problems in self-control, self-realisation and impediments to our development of inner vitality and a capacity for trusting intimate relationships.
Associated symptomatic emotional states I frequently address include: fears of dependency, aggression, rage, shyness, lack of assertiveness and fears of separation and/or abandonment, hypersensitivity to criticism and shame, humiliation, chronic envy, boredom, emptiness, and susceptibility to embarrassment. A lack of authentic purpose, meaning and personal vision is often associated as both cause and effect of psychological deficits in self-esteem. I treat problems in the maintenance of self-preservation functions where psychological issues disrupt fundamental bodily functions such as sleep, appetite and libido, often resulting in psychosomatic problems and physical disease.

Following a thorough assessment of each person’s unique profile, I offer long and short-term individual psychotherapy, parental and couple’s counselling as well as full personality assessments for both clinical insight as well as vocational guidance based on true self-knowledge.
Mood:, Depressive, Anxiety and Stress related issues
I am familiar with the full spectrum of mood disorders, ranging from mild to severe depressive states, and including suicidal and other self-destructive impulses as well as bipolar disorders. Anxiety states are also an area of special interest and expertise, from general non-specific forms, to social phobias, acute panic disorders, and both acute and chronic stress syndromes.
Adolescence

I have specialised extensively in work with adolescents and young adults, these issues, amongst others, often being reflected in conflict between parent and child, authority figures and educational and broader social value-systems. I address emotionally-based inhibitions in realising full academic, personal and social potentials, particularly among adolescents.

Other symptoms common to adolescents include impulsivity, resistance to both emotional and social learning from experience, as well as cognitive or intellectual resistance to learning. Rage, self-destructive acting-out, including self-mutilation, procrastination and motivational problems usually require uniquely tailored interventions.

Attention Deficits in adolescence and Adults

I provide a specific and effective range of treatments for so-called Attention Deficit Disorder sub-groups and associated problems in impulse control.
Addictive behaviours
My extensive experience in the treatment of all forms of addiction, including alcohol and most chemical and process addictions such as sex, pornography, eating, work and gambling, has resulted in evidence of successful outcomes. Latest evidence-based therapeutic strategies provide realistic alternatives to therapies using outdated concepts of addiction as an illness or disease, which may result in ineffective ‘interventions’ which can damage hope in the addict and those involved in their lives. I have developed a special interest in work with ‘techno-addictions’, from mobile phones, gaming, internet, I-pods and, especially internet pornography addiction. I offer emergency post-rehabilitation clinic relapse-prevention interventions.

Other areas of experience include:
Men’s and mature adult issues; fathering, couples counselling, husbands’ role development in the context of social-historical changes to family structures. Sex-related concerns ranging from performance anxieties to gender- related confusion.

Divorce, loss, bereavement, illness, HIV/AIDS, aging, death anxieties.
Training offered in a variety of mindful and other meditation techniques.
Advanced Supervision and provision of psychological theory, skills development, consultation, and seminars for social media, (Newspapers, magazines, television and radio) educators, allied health professionals, lay counsellors and volunteers.
Course development addressing latest critical debates. Involved in academic development via CPD courses and as an academic advisor at Texila American University.

Special Interest : Psychoeducational assessments, assessment for Grade R/1 readiness, exam accommodations, play therapy, adolescent counselling, parent counselling, adult therapy for anxiety, depression, bereavement and adjustment difficulties. Group and individual trauma debriefing.

My approach is integrative, ecosystemic and holistic. I incorporate CBT techniques into my work, focusing on the person as a unique individual driven by human needs , living and constantly developing within the context of their family, social, community and occupational surroundings, within the demands of a broader social context.

I believe that every human being has the potential for proactive growth and change. Learning and development is lifelong. We become stuck when we fail to recognise that we have imprtant choices to make, and to act on it. The choices we make often determine our potential for adaptive change...and whether we create and nurture psychological stability and happiness, or cause our own chaos and misery. The process of creating and recreating our own realities begins in the mind.

"The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another."
