The workshop will be grouped into two main areas: the development of career measurement and the practice of career assessment. Common forms of qualitative career assessment processes will be discussed namely card sorts, genograms, timelines, life space mapping, pattern identification and early recollection.

The majority of young people leave school with only a vague knowledge of employment opportunities and with little insight as to the most appropriate career direction for their abilities, interests and personality. The workshop will be grouped into two main areas: the development of career measurement and the practice of career assessment. The first area will explore both the theoretical foundations of career assessment and the psychometric issues in test development. The discussion on the practice of career evaluation and assessment will focus on the issues of qualitative and quantitative career assessment and the use of career tests in a cultural context for which they were not originally developed. The main focus will be on qualitative career assessment which can be described as informal forms of assessment. This method provides an opportunity for client and counselor interaction that is flexible, open-ended, holistic and non-statistical. Common forms of qualitative career assessment processes will be discussed namely card sorts, genograms, timelines, life space mapping, pattern identification and early recollection.
