Mrs Claire Strohbach
Clinical Psychologist

MA. Clin. Psych (Unisa)
Glencairn
Cape Town
021 782 3125
084 749 0818
Special Interest : Relationship/couples counselling/understanding and managing anxiety and
depression/personal growth through life transitions/self esteem work/trauma
counselling/working through bereavement

We all find ourselves embedded within a complex web of important
relationships. Current times are characterized by emotional strain and
relationship conflicts. Empowering people to find more constructive ways to
understand and engage in their relationships, with their characteristic
complexities and ambiguities, working through life transitions and
adjustments and personal growth work are the main themes of my work.

Issues reverberate throughout our life span. Different
life stages present new challenges or call for us to deal with issues that we may have faced before, on deeper levels.

Renewing the way one looks at life, creating mental disciplines and
behavioural changes, improves self esteem and relationship connections.
My overall focus is on providing an empathetic space within which to help
people understand themselves and their circumstances on deeper levels, and to deal more effectively with their life challenges.

My background training was in ecosystemic thinking, family and narrative
therapy. As we all know though life’s best teacher is experience. Over many
years now through personal life experience and professional exposure to
various ideas and approaches, I have integrated all that I have learned and
essentially developed and continue to evolve an eclectic style of
psychotherapy where my clients needs are paramount.

NOORDHOEK: Wellspring Centre, Cnr Ou Kaapse Weg and Longboat Rd (Near Longbeach Mall)

HOUTBAY: Phakalane Retreat Centre, 12 Hunters Way.
072 778 1959
Special Interest : I am interested in offering people a warm, honest and supportive professional relationship that helps them to identify, understand and effectively deal with areas where they feel stuck in their lives.

By "stuck" I mean that you may feel held back or stopped from living your life to the fullest of your potential by any of the following:

*Unhelpful thoughts, emotions and behaviour that keep happening over and over and that you struggle to understand and cope with.

*Traumatic events and memories from your past (including abuse as a child).

*Feeling overwhelmed by life and struggling to cope with it.

*Not feeling able to cope with changes in your life

*Struggling or dissatisfied with relationships in your life

*Feeling depressed, down and lacking energy needed to live your life

*Feeling that your life lacks meaning and purpose

In the short term, I aim to teach you skills and offer you tools that will help you to cope and get your life back on track again. Should you decide to work with me over a longer time, we will work together to gain a deeper understanding of where your difficulties come from and how they play out in your life. Most importantly, we will aim to unlock the potential for you to live your life more fully that has been blocked by the difficulties you have been experiencing.

Although I work effectively with both women and men, as a male therapist I have a particular interest in working with men.

Special Interest : Thank you for viewing my profile.

Choosing a therapist can feel stressful and a little overwhelming! Sometimes one just needs to trust ones instinct and take the first step - without hoping for complete information at the beginning.

There is a saying that ’the path only opens up when the journey begins...’ If it is any consolation, choosing a therapist can sometimes be the hardest part of the entire process!

As a therapist I work with ordinary individuals and couples who have ordinary problems, although at times these problems can result in a feeling of being in a crisis.

In response to these life and mental health challenges, I try to provide a safe, compassionate and containing space in which you might be able to transform your life and your relationships - rather than simply ’putting them back together again’.

One of the ways in which I attempt to do this is by assisting you to find the ’True North’ of your life and your relationships - in other words the ’meaning and purpose’ that will allow you to overcome the obstacles that may currently feel insurmountable.

As the client I will also gently encourage you to try to hold your life, relationships and difficulties a little more lightly, and in the therapy space we will also work together to integrate both ones ’acceptable’ as well as ones ’unacceptable’ selves, even if this sometimes means speaking the ’unspeakable’.

I try to work fairly quickly and consistently request feedback regarding how the therapy is progressing, as well as engaging on an ongoing basis with ’difficult’ issues such as affordability and when to end the therapy.
