Hey all,

I am a trainee psychotherapist in London and considering moving to SA (Cape Town) After my Counselling Diploma course has finished, to get some experience before returning to complete my MA dissertation.  Was wondering if anyone could give me any ideas/tips/info on the job scene over there, whether my UK qualifications are transferrable, how it is to set up in private practice, whether I'm likely to be able to find work etc. etc. etc....  any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Beth.

Hi Beth

the best way to find out about your qualifications and whether they will be accepted, will be to contact HPCSA and ask them. Their website is www.hpcsa.co.za

Finding work in the field of psychology is difficult, even for many registered psychologists.

Yes, finding work as a therapist in South Africa at the moment is very difficult indeed. It is my impression that psychology and psychologists in South Africa are under considerable pressure.

Hi Beth. By now you have probably had all your answers. I
recently returned from working in the UK for 10 years,
although I trained here. A few years ago coming to SA
with UK qualifications still required working under
supervision for 6 months. Perhaps that has changed,
although I doubt it. Unlike the UK, and as some people
have already pointed out, psychologists tend to work
privately. Good luck.
