This is my first post on this forum. I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder almost two years ago after a lifetime of stormy instability. I have been in therapy for four years during which I often pretended to be okay when I really wasn’t. I am tired of hiding and lying and emotional instability. I am tired of hurting my loved ones the way that I do.

I am therefore desperate to find a support group or somebody with an in-depth knowledge of BPD. I am on mediation and in therapy but would like to make contact with a therapist with experience of dealing with BPD patients.

I live in Cape Town and would like to create a forum for BPD support - not only to the patients but also to our loved ones.

I hope that there is somebody that can help me.

Hi There

First off, congratulations for maintaining 4 years of therapy.  Even if you have not been entirely up front in therapy, you have learnt from that which you have experinced in the therapeutic process.  We dont only learn from the positive experiences.

It sounds as though you have gained some insight to the self and to others and consequently, you can never go back to that state of being prior to your learning - your conscience wont allow it.  I know much about BPD but I am uncertain what more you need to know?  I am also uncertain whether you have been 4 years in therapy with the same therapist? If so, together, you are doing much that is right.  If you feel you have reached a point of stagnation, then please voice this in your therapy session.

Not many therapists like to work with lables - such as BPD - because they feel one might tend to define oneself in accordance with the diagnosis.  This has happened.  I believe diagnosis is important in terms of providing a general guide to therapy in that it can serve to alert therapists to the initial do's and dont's.  However, do not allow BPD to be all-consuming of your identity.

I am CT based but am not certain of any groups running to assist you - perhaps anther therapist might know better than I.  I used to run dialectical behaviour therapy groups in JHB when I lived there and perhaps that is something to look into here.

Amongst your aims, you wish to seek a therapist with adequate knowledge of BPD.  Well, should you feel comfortable, you are welcome to contact me or post your questions using this forum.

Regards

Tracy

Dear Tracy

Thank you for your reply. yes, I have been in therapy for 4 years but I feel that I’ve wasted much time by not being honest and consistant in this therapy.  I am currently at the second therapists and have to admit to myself that I did not utilise the safe space of her support and knowledge the way I could have. I have made a decision to change that and will do anything in my power to get to grips with BPD.

Even though I learned many things in therapy I often didn’t apply this to my life and therefore couldn’t live with sustainability and conviction. On an intellectual level I understand many things, but I have been unable to live what I know. I would like to go as far as to say that I probably chose not to live all the insights that I have gained. I have a deep sense of worthlessness which I could never seem to grasp. I have displayed passive aggressive behaviour all my life but haven’t admitted this until very recently.

My partner and my family have been through hell. I somehow could never acknowledge that I sabotaged them as much as I sabotaged myself.

I have a lot to say and a lot to learn still and have read that dialectical behaviour therapy is highly advisable as a treatment of BPD. I know about a programme that is run at the lentegeur hospital but am not aware of any other DBT programme.

Regards

S

DR Tracy
You've mentioned that you used to run DBT workshops in Jhb. I hail from the east rand and am desperately looking for such a group. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

HI i would be very interested in joining or assisting to get a grp together for discussions. i also live in cape town.  it doesnt have to be a big group, and i would rather chat to a few of us with this illness, than wait for a "bigger group" to be created. Really hope to connect with like minded people.
